About
Our Mission
Our motto is “From Learning, to Willing, to Doing,” referring to the process of being a good coastal steward:
- Read, listen, and learn about the issues
- Gain a connection to the topic and be willing to get engaged
- Be a pillar in your community doing the work
Our Goals
The coalition’s work focuses on the communities around the Elizabeth River, with the idea that our resources are publicly available to be used and scaled up in communities across the Commonwealth. We aim to:
- Create a robust and diverse group of stakeholders to implement fishing gear and abandoned vessel mitigation, removal, and prevention, and fulfill the goals outlined in the Virginia Marine Debris Reduction Plan
- Increase literacy for stakeholders on marine debris issues
- Create and maintain an online hub of up-to-date information, educational and programming events, abandoned vessel inventory, and educational resources
The Virginia Marine Debris Coalition
The Virginia Marine Debris Coalition, funded by Virginia Sea Grant, is made up of government agencies, businesses, non-profits, and educational institutions to collaborate across sectors and help guide and facilitate marine debris removal and outreach efforts around the Elizabeth River.
We provide resources, connections, and greater capacity to our communities to work towards cleaner, healthier, waterways.
Our local efforts help implement the goals of the Virginia Marine Debris Reduction Plan around the Elizabeth River, with the intent that our work can be scaled up in communities across the Commonwealth.
We take care to document all of our accomplishments, events, and resources, so you may use them in your jurisdiction.
